Integration of culture and community development in municipal recreation services

The study was undertaken in 1993 among the recreation directors of municipalities of over 4000 people in the province of Quebec. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the degree of integration of culture and community developmentae within recreation services. The findings show that these two sectors of activity have been quite well integrated into the traditional areas of recreation services provided by those agencies, and that this trend should even get stronger in the future. The results also suggest that the image, mission and role of a municipal recreation service in Quebec are changing at a fast pace in such multifunctional agencies. Therefore, it is expected that community development and culture will increase in importance among other recreational services in the years to come.
