SPATIAL AND SPATIOTEMPORAL REACTION-DIFFUSION PATTERNS IN HETEROGENEOUS MEDIA

Nonlinear ionic reaction and diffusion in heterogeneous media are considered for the limits of global and local electroneutrality, respectively. It is assumed that reaction rates, as well as diffusion, depend on concentration and/or position. Referring to recent results [1, 2], it is shown by example that non-constant parameters can induce bistability and Turing structures, as well as localized structures. Anisotropic nucleation at surface defects is described using elliptic-cylindrical coordinates. Finally, traveling waves are modulated by periodically varying reaction-diffusion conditions.
