ANALYTICAL PREDICTION OF THE COGGING TORQUE IN RADIAL-FIELD PERMANENT-MAGNET BRUSHLESS MOTORS

A method for predicting the cogging torque in radial-field permanent magnet brushless motors, based on the analytical calculation of the airgap field distribution and the net lateral force acting on the stator teeth, is developed and validated. The technique is applicable to both internal and external rotor motor topologies, modelled in a cylindrical coordinate system. It can also cater with variants to the basic motor topologies, such as those with shifted magnets (ie. spaced unsymmetrically) or unevenly distributed stator slots etc, and as such can enable design features aimed at reducing the level of cogging torque to be evaluated.
