Citizenship education in Higher Education

The importance of education for citizenship is recognized as fundamental in basic education which is not the case in Higher education. As a matter of fact, the universities that share the need and commitment to the education of citizens apply similar strategies to those used in basic education, which imply that university students are assumed as eternal heirs or newcomers. Besides providing some elements for conceptual precision about education for citizens and citizenship education, this article presents the most common forms of citizenship education in Higher education. It provides critical elements for the analysis of the subject and introduces an alternative for citizen education through the public use of reasoning and the genesis of political communities that serve as scenarios for university students to become pioneers in a public space.
