摘要：

We give an optimal estimate for the (Morse) index i(del) of any nonflat Yang-Mills connection del over the m-sphere S-m (m greater than or equal to 5) with the standard Riemannian metric as follows: i(del) greater than or equal to m + 1. Notice the canonical connection on S-m = SO(m + 1)/SO(m) (m greater than or equal to 5) achieves the equality.
