INTERANNUAL VARIABILITY OF THE GREENLAND SEA DEEP CONVECTION

摘要
The analysis of oceanographic data obtained in the Central Greenland Sea within the period 1980 - 1993 made possible to discover the tracks of deep convection manifestated in the variability of water masses thermohaline conditions. By means of simple mathematical model it is shown that surface to bottom convection is possible in the case of surface salinity higher than 34.82 parts per thousand. This result is confirmed by the observations. The explanation of convection depth and bottom water characteristics interannual variability as a sequence of saline or fresh surface water local intrusions is suggested.
