SOCIAL INTEGRATION OF SALVADORAN REFUGEES

This 1988-89 study analyzed the cultural adaptation and social integration of Salvadoran refugees of rural origin in Canada. Premigration experiences were found to influence the social integration process, including economic, social, political, and ideological experiences. Furthermore, four sociodemographic factors affected integration: reasons for departure, age, gender, and marital status. Postmigration experiences were also found to affect the process, including integration policies, family life, social relationships, future plans, and isolation. Recommendations for social services are discussed.
