摘要
We study a cellular automaton that generates avalanches reminiscent of those occurring in granular materials and fault displacements. We show that the temporal evolution of a suitably defined macroscopic variable, the mean energy of the system, can be described as a stochastic Markov process. We solve the corresponding master equation and confirm the appropriateness of the theory by comparing with the results of the automaton. © 1995 The American Physical Society.
