Seroprevalences of HBsAg, Anti-HCV and Anti-HIV Among Blood Donors in Istanbul

The retrospective study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among 23048 volunteer blood donors at Haseki Training and Research Hospital between January 2007 and December 2008. All donors were tested for antibodies against HCV and HIV 1/2, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) by ELISA method. HBsAg, anti-HCV and anti-HIV 1/2 tests were found to be positive in 469 (2.03%), 63 (0.27%) and 17 (0.07%) serum samples, respectively. Western Blot test was found to be positive in 5 of 17 blood donors with positive anti-HIV 1/2. In our study, although HBV and HCV seropositivity rates among volunteer blood donors are similar to our country results, anti-HIV seropositivity ratewasfound to be high.
