The effect of a systemic hemocoagulant, Bothropase, on wound healing process was studied in albino rats. Granuloma tissue formed on dead space wound was harvested 10 days after wounding. Tensile (breaking) strength, lysyl oxidase activity, collagen and mucopolysaccharide contents were estimated. Although tensile strength was increased significantly in the Bothropase treated animals, no significant change was observed in the lysyl oxidase activity and collagen content. However, a significant fall in mucopolysaccharide (hexuronic acid) level was observed. Increased tensile strength must therefore be attributed to mechanisms other than the formation of cross-links in collagen.
