A novel Otto cycle engine concept, in which intake and compression are carried out in a compressor unit separate from the expansion unit, is presented. The compressor is driven via a continuously-variable transmission whose speed ratio determines the power output. Pumping as well as rubbing friction losses are reduced. Also compression work is reduced by increasing the heat rejection during this phase of the cycle. A regenerator is used to transfer heat from the exhaust gases to the compressed combustible mixture. Dilution of the combustible mixture is minimal, so permitting a lowering of the fuel-air ratios at idling and low load conditions. The proposed system includes the capability of supercharged operation.
