ASPECTS OF REPRODUCTION IN MOUNTAIN REEDBUCK FROM ROLFONTEIN NATURE-RESERVE

One hundred and thirty-one mountain reedbuck Redunca fulvorufula of varying ages were collected during April 1981. The corpus luteum maintained a large size (7,4 to 8,0 mm; n = 19) throughout pregnancy. The amygdaloidal ovary showed a preponderance for ovulation to occur from the left ovary, while implantation only occurred in the right uterine horn. Most females conceived for the first time when 12 to 16 months of age, while males reached sexual maturity at about 27 months. A reproductive rate close to 90% seems likely for the studied population.
