EXCRETION OF LISTERIA-MONOCYTOGENES IN FECES AFTER LISTERIOSIS - RATE, QUANTITY AND DURATION

Sixteen out of 74 (21.6 %) patients with listeriosis excreted L. monocytogenes in faeces, while none of 103 simultaneous routine diarrhoea specimens contained Listeria. Early specimens contained at least 10(4) Listeria per ml of faeces. Excretion ceased within two weeks, except in one newborn. The rapid screening method, using L-PALCAMY and PALCAM, can be useful for epidemiological studies.
