NTT has been providing three types of video service. Type I video service is used for traffic monitoring, relay broadcasting of horse races, etc., with the same level of quality as general home TV service. Application of Type II video service is limited to Super Captain service(*1), while Type-III video service is used for high-quality transmission of material to editing studios at TV stations. All three of these services transmit video using the NTSC system. On February 1, 1994, NTT started providing HDTV transmission service by digital optical fiber as a new item in its video service menu. This paper outlines the services provided and the newly developed system for HDTV transmission. It should be noted that this system was utilized as the relay circuit between the en route camera locations and the broadcasting stations when the parade following the Crown Prince's wedding ceremony was broadcast live on June 9, 1993.
