DEVELOPMENT OF A GENERIC DATABASE FOR CAE/CAD/CAM SYSTEM AT AN AIR-FORCE FACILITY

It is well recognized that the use of computer aided engineering, computer aided design/drafting, and computer aided manufacturing (CAE/CAD/CAM) equipment will have a significant impact on the design/manufacturing productivity of a facility particularly in the "high tech" area. For a facility that is convinced of this fact and prepared to make an investment into the purchase of such equipment, the question that first arises is the quantity and kind of equipment to purchase. In particular, what hardware platforms, what software product, what support equipment, and what network configuration is needed? This study was aimed at developing a data base that would provide the basis for answering these questions relative to the specific CAE/CAD/CAM needs at an Air Force facility. The study dealt with a methodology for identifying the needs of diverse groups that make up the engineering/drafting/analysis/maintenance and operations at the facility. The result of the study makes specific recommendations relative to each group that is to become part of the "network" even though some of the group have some experience with CAD/CAM and others have no experience at all. © 1990.
