摘要
This study reports the findings of a state-wide survey of alcohol, tobacco, illicit drug, and medication use among applicants for vocational rehabilitation services (n=227). Only persons with primary disabilities other than chemical dependency are considered in the analysis. Prevalence and patterns of use are described, and comparisons with the general population are made. This study also examines disability-related factors and their relationship to substance use. While alcohol use patterns approximate the general population, the percent of applicants who report current tobacco use or lifetime use of illicit drugs appear considerably higher than the general population. The implications from these findings are discussed, and particular issues for vocational rehabilitation counselors are provided. The necessity for screening for substance abuse problems among all applicants for VR services is stressed.
