ESTRUS BEHAVIOR AND CONCEPTION RATES IN ESTRUS SYNCHRONIZED CATTLE AND BUFFALO HEIFERS

Crossbred heifers (103), non-descript cow heifers (40) and buffalo heifers (41) were synchronized Tor oestrus using PGF2 alpha (11 day apart), silastic coil (10 days treatment) and norgestomet implant (10 days treatment). In local cow heifers and buffalo heifers silastic coils could not be used because of difficulty in insertion in vagina. Oestrus rate in PG treated heifers was less (60 to 70%) than in animals in which silastic coils and norgestomet were implanted (97%). The ovulation lime was significantly longer in heifers under norgestomet treatment. The conception rate in heifers at first synchronized oestrus was slightly less in both crossbred and buffaloes. It was higher in local heifers under PGF2 alpha treatment. The overall conception rate within 90 days of treatment was higher in PG treated animals than in animals with norgestomet implants. However in buffalo class there was no difference between the treatments.
