DIABETIC DYSLIPIDEMIA AND ATHEROSCLEROSIS

Non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is frequently accompanied by qualitative and quantitative abnormalities in plasma lipids and lipoproteins, Increased triglycerides and decreased HDL (high density lipoprotein)-cholesterol are commonly observed; these alterations are recognized risk factors for coronary heart disease. Moderately elevated plasma triglyceride-rich liproproteins may contribute to the atherogenic process through remodelling of LDL (low density liproprotein) and HDL particles. Good glycemic control, diet and, when necessary, treatment with fibrates will correct or partially reverse the abnormal lipoprotein profiles found in diabetic patients.
