THE FAAS ADVANCED AUTOMATION SYSTEM - STRATEGIES FOR FUTURE AIR-TRAFFIC CONTROL-SYSTEMS

As part of its National Aviation System Plan, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated the design of the Advanced Automation System, or AAS, to replace both the en-route and terminal ATC computer systems over the next decade. The authors characterize the nature of ATC automation and of the AAS, present the major objectives to be achieved by the AAS, and discuss in detail the major problems faced by government and industry in the design, development, and implementation of such a system.
