ANTHROPOGENIC STIMULATION OF BACTERIAL-ACTIVITY IN THE BOTTOM SEDIMENTS OF LAKE BAIKAL

摘要
The activity of microorganisms involved in the turnover of carbon and sulfur was studied in the bottom sediments of Lake Baikal in the region adjacent to the pulp and paper mill. The rates of bacterial methanogenesis and sulfate reduction measured in the region of the waste water disposal were 10 - 1000 times higher than the rates of these processes in the control regions. The revealed difference is the result of the stimulation of microbial activity by the organic and mineral wastes disposed by the pulp and paper mill.
