ACHIEVEMENT GOALS, MOTIVATIONAL CLIMATE AND ACHIEVEMENT STRATEGIES AND BEHAVIORS IN SPORT

Recent analyses of achievement motivation in the sport setting have focussed on how achievement goals organize achievement beliefs and guide subsequent decision making and behavior. This paper examines the research conducted on the cognitive correlates of goal perspectives, the development of scales to measure goal perspectives, and discusses the relationship of goal perspectives to achievement strategies and behavior. The paper concludes by focussing upon the development of achievement goals and the role adults play in creating motivational climates that foster goal perspectives and achievement behaviors.
