摘要
The Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) has been discharging heavy metals into the Derwent Estuary since 1917 and has had an exemption to exceed discharge levels specified under State legislation since 1973. Sediments down stream of EZ, were cored and dated using the caesium-137 (Cs-137) technique, and analysed for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. The highest concentrations were found at approximately 0.8 m which appear to correlate with the period of known high emission concentrations during the early 1970s. Shallow sediments showed lower concentrations reflecting EZs' claims of greater recovery of metals by improved technology.
