摘要
The role of fibre amplifiers in the development of optical telecommunications is analysed, with the aim of forming a perspective on the past, present and future trends of optics in the network. It is concluded that a threshold of capability for fixed-link communications has been crossed, and a new era of essentially unlimited information flow over unlimited distances and to unlimited numbers of customers has now been entered. The physical structure and hardware content of new networks consequential on these facts will influence the nature and quality of the services provided on them.
