摘要：
Atrial fibrillation and heart failure are of increasing relevance in cardiovascular patients. Both medical conditions promote each other. Hypertrophy and diastolic heart failure lead to fibrosis of the left atrium and account for the development and maintenance of atrial fibrillation. The blockade of the renin-angiotensin system plays an important role in the prevention of heart failure as well as in the prevention of atrial fibrillation. A high and irregular heart rate can be responsible for the development of heart failure in selected cases. In these patients, the progress of the disease can be influenced by rate or rhythm control.
