摘要
Different methods to enhance repeater distance have been discussed including coherent optical communication and optical amplifiers, A distance of 550 kms at 1 Mb/s can be achieved using coherent system. High bit rates of the order of 10 Gb/s are possible using coherent system as has been shown at the laboratory level. Distance of greater than 3000 kms and bit rate distance product of 5 to 10 Tb/s km has been achieved using EDFAs. A distance of 10,000 kms can be achieved using fluoride fibres at infra red region.
