On the basis of the material discussed, the known conditions for the application of surface-active substances (SAS) as detergents are generalized and explained. The conditions of the effect of SAS structure on detergency are formulated. Distinguishing elementary events in SAS detergent action allows one to analyze their mechanism, to suggest criteria for evaluation of their efficiency, and to determine the requirements for SAS structure and properties. The requirements formulated allow one to predict SAS application in the detergent process,
