CF-252 AS AN ISOTOPIC NEUTRON SOURCE FOR ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS BY NEUTRON INELASTIC-SCATTERING - COMPARISON WITH AM-241-BE

Determination of elemental composition by prompt gamma-rays following inelastic scattering reactions induced by isotopic neutron sources of Cf-252 and Am-241-Be is described. The effectiveness of the neutron sources, in terms of the counting sensitivity per neutron source output for various mineral elements at their characteristic prompt gamma-rays, are summarized and compared. Detection conditions and detection limits of the elements derived from the measured spectra using the two neutron sources are also taken into account. Experimental results indicate that the Cf-252 source provides comparable sensitivity for measurement of prompt gamma-rays with threshold energies of less than 1.2 MeV, but is inferior to Am-241-Be source if a lower detection limit is involved. Increasing Cf-252 source output may improve this detection condition.
