摘要
This article examines the relationship between the family and the state in the provision of care to older people. It focusses on the issue of why the family and female kin in particular care for older relatives. The role of the state in promoting the primacy of family care is discussed with reference to a major empirical study of the care of older people in Sheffield, England. The results of this study are used to highlight the normative basis of the caring relationship. In conclusion alternative forms of care are examined and doubt is cast on the simplified assumption of a conflict between older people and their carers. © 1991, Canadian Association on Gerontology.
