Experiments in an antechamber permitting the ignition of a fuel mixture by a flame front propagating behind a shock wave generated in an antechamber are described. The shock wave, on reaching the combustion chamber, leads to motion, compression, and heating of the mixture in the chamber, in connection with which its ignition and combustion conditions are improved. The combustion chamber is a square channel with optical glass mounted in its front and rear walls, permitting inspection of the cross section. Flame propagation is made visible by the Topler method and photographed. The studies showed the ignition of fuel mixtures by a flame front leaving an antechamber behind a specially produced shock wave is a reliable means of intensifying the combustion of fuel mixtures.
