AN APPROACH TO THE CALCULATION OF STOPPING POWERS OF LOW-ENERGY ELECTRONS IN SOME GASES OF DOSIMETRIC INTEREST

Stopping powers of low energy (< 10 keV) electrons in muscle-equivalent gas mixture, its constituents, butane and water vapour are calculated, using an analytical approach. The collision of electrons with the gaseous atoms and molecules was characterised by three cross section formulae for total scattering and total ionisation. Cross section data for the mixture were generated from experimental values for the constituents. The cross section expressions were fined to the resulting data as well as those for the single gases. This enabled parameters in the expressions to be determined for these gases. These parameters were then used in the evaluation of the basic stopping power equations for electrons. This work has been compared with that by other workers.
