Efficiency of O-2((1)Sigma(+)(g)) formation by O(D-1)+O-2

The efficiency of formation of O-2 ((1)Sigma(+)(g)) by energy transfer between O(D-1) and O-2 has been measured relative to the efficiency of O-2((1)Delta(g)) formation by photolysis of ozone at 2587 angstrom. The two singlet states of molecular oxygen were formed in a flow system and their relative concentrations determined with a calibrated detection system by measuring their emission at 7620 angstrom and 1.27 mu. The results show that if the efficiency of O-2((1)Delta(g)) formation by O-3 photolysis is unity then the (1)Sigma(+)(g) state of O-2 is produced in more than (85 +/- 15) % of the collisions deactivating O(D-1). This determination is compared with previous results.
