Energy transfer from O(D-1) to O-2

The efficiency of the energy transfer process O(D-1) + O-2((3)Sigma(-)(g)) -> O-2((1)Sigma(+)(g)) + O(P-3) has been assessed relative to the efficiency of quenching of O(D-1) O(D-1) + O-2((3)Sigma(-)(g)) -> O-2((3)Sigma(-)(g)) + O(P-3). Excited atomic oxygen was generated by the vacuum ultraviolet photolysis of oxygen, and O-2((1)Sigma(+)(g)) was detected in a time-resolved flow system by optical emission at lambda = 762nm. One O-2((1)Sigma(+)(g)) molecule is found to be formed for about 180 O(D-1) atoms deactivated: the relation of this result to the excitation efficiency obtained by other workers is discussed.
