Postoperative delirium is a widespread problem in the perioperative care of cardiac surgery patients. According to the currently available data more than 50% of patients develop postoperative delirium after cardiac surgery. Despite many years of research neither the pathophysiology nor effective strategies to avoid delirium are completely understood. For the treating physicians and nursing personnel up to date knowledge on this issue is therefore essential. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
