Is age-related macular degeneration a manifestation of Alzheimer’s disease?

The paper suggests clinical, morphological, and pathogenetic parallels between Alzheimer’s disease and age-related macular degeneration. The common embryology, anatomy, and physiology of the brain and the eye create preconditions for the occurrence of associated pathological processes in them, including processes where the morphological substrate is a pathological aggregation of the amyloid-βpeptide and neurodegeneration. Based on extensive data, the authors substantiate the need for a careful study of the ophthalmological state in the daily practice of an ophthalmologist, which is promising for early diagnosis and monitoring of Alzheimer’s disease. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
