Online Scheduling on Two Uniform Unbounded Parallel-Batch Machines to Minimize Makespan

We study an online (over time) scheduling problem on two uniform unbounded parallel-batch machines with processing speed 1 and v(0<v⩽1\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$v (0<v\leqslant 1$$\end{document}), respectively, to minimize the makespan. We first show that no online algorithm can have a competitive ratio less than 1+αL\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$1+ \alpha _L$$\end{document}, where αL=(5-1)/2≈0.618\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\alpha _L= (\sqrt{5}-1)/2\approx 0.618$$\end{document} if 0<v⩽1/2\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$0<v\leqslant 1/2$$\end{document}, and αL=α2(v)\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\alpha _L= \alpha _2(v)$$\end{document} is the positive root of α3+3α2+(3-1/v)α-1/v=0\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\alpha ^3 +3 \alpha ^2+(3-1/v)\alpha -1/v=0$$\end{document} if 1/2<v⩽1\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$1/2 < v \leqslant 1$$\end{document}. This lower bound is still valid when all jobs have the same processing times. Then, we provide an online algorithm with a competitive ratio at most min{(5+1)/2,2/v}\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\min \{(\sqrt{5}+1)/2,\; \sqrt{2}/v\}$$\end{document}. When the jobs have the same processing times, we present the best possible online algorithm with a competitive ratio 1+αL\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$1+ \alpha _L$$\end{document}.
