On the basis of the Timoshenko theory of plates, by taking into account the effect of transverse compression and the δc fracture criterion, we solve the two-dimensional problem of quasistatic exfoliation of a finite plate from the Winkler base by separation of its edge. It is shown that, in the cases where the edge of the plate is loaded by forces and kinematically, the mechanisms of fracture are qualitatively different. © 2000 Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers.
