摘要
The use of synthetic chemicals in the management of plant diseases, though highly effective in most cases, is now being discouraged because of health and environmental concerns. One of the best alternatives is organic management. It is non-toxic, cost-effective and environment friendly. This review takes a look at the state of organic management of plant disease in sub-Saharan Africa. The traditional methods of plant disease management in rural communities and the scientific basis for their successes are discussed. Conventional methods of organic plant disease management and examples of success recorded are also highlighted. Finally, the benefits derivable from and the problems militating against organic plant diseases management in the region are enumerated. Organic management of plant diseases holds the key to increased food production and improved quality of produce in Sub-Saharan Africa. It also has the potential to reduce the cost of production while preserving the natural ecosystem. © 2021, Indian Phytopathological Society.
