We describe the structure of involutory matrices over the domain of principal ideals with respect to the similarity transformation and construct a canonical form with respect to this transformation. As a consequence, we establish a criterion of similarity of the involutory matrices over the domain of principal ideals. The obtained results are applied to the description of the structure of solutions of the matrix equation X2 = In over the domain of principal ideals. © 2021, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.
