Supercomputer technologies in Russia: Status and problems of development

The development of state-of-the-art engineering systems implies new production technologies. These technologies rest to an increasingly larger degree not on real trials of a product (project) under development but rather on its virtual representation and various modeled pilot situations in order to identify information that was previously obtained through real experiment. The larger the system and the greater number of parameters and interconnections to be taken into account, the greater the number of computational capabilities. Speaking at a meeting of the RAS Presidium, Academician V.B. Betelin characterized scientific, productive, and economic aspects of building up the performance of state-of-the-art computer technologies and outlined the developments of recent decades in the world IT market and the situation in our country.
