The role of biomechanical pressure in the functioning of the human organism, in particular, the dentofacial system, is discussed. Some problems concerning this problem are indicated. We consider in most detail a biomechanical model as applied to the treatment of a congenital cleft of the hard palate. An important element of the model is taking into account growth strains of a living tissue, and parameters of the appropriate constitutive relation are determined experimentally. An analysis of results of a solution obtained by the finite element method is performed. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
