Mittelgesichtsfrakturen stellen gegenwärtig etwa die Hälfte aller Gesichtsschädelverletzungen dar. Die Computertomographie (CT) ist für die Primärdiagnostik sehr hilfreich. Isolierte Mittelgesichtsfrakturen (Nasenbein, laterales Mittelgesicht) lassen sich auch hinreichend genau mittels herkömmlicher Röntgentechnik darstellen. Für die Therapieplanung ist die Beurteilung des Frakturverlaufs an den so genannten Mittelgesichtspfeilern essenziell, deren Wiederherstellung für Funktion und Ästhetik entscheidend ist. Zur Therapiekontrolle genügen konventionelle Aufnahmen.
