High-frequency acoustic waves are not sufficient to heat the solar chromosphere

Mysteriously, the Sun's outer atmosphere is hotter than the surface. One popular explanation is that the chromosphere is heated by dissipation of high-frequency sound waves. These elusive waves have now been detected with the space-based observatory TRACE. Surprise, surprise... their energy flux is ten times too low for acoustic waves to be the dominant heat source.
