A recent meeting of the RAS Presidium evaluated the performance of the Academy’s research institutes in implementing the RAS Presidium’s Basic Research Program on novel optical materials over 2006–2008. The article below is based on the paper presented by Academician Evgenii M. Dianov, the coordinator of the program. Its topic is of particular relevance to the rapidly developing fields of laser technology and fiber-optic communications.
