Air oxidation of chromium-based composites

The oxidation kinetics of chromium and its composites Cr-2% Mg, Cr-2% (La + B) obtained by powder metallurgy and of heat-resistant VKh-2K alloy obtained at temperatures of 900 to 1400 °C and held for 1 to 50 h is studied. It is shown that the oxidation of pure chromium up to 1100 °C and of composites and VKh-2K alloy up to 1200 °C is described by a parabolic law (n ≈ 2). The oxidation resistance of composites is high and commensurable with that of VKh-2K alloy. Therefore, they are suitable for producing parts for operation at high temperatures and in corrosive environments.
