Das Thoraxtrauma stellt einen wesentlichen Faktor dar, der zur Sterblichkeit während der „goldenen Stunde“ nach Trauma beiträgt. Viele Patienten mit thorakalen Verletzungen sterben erst nach Eintreffen in der Klinik. Weniger als 10% aller stumpfen Thoraxtraumen erfordern eine Thorakotomie.
