Based on published data and on our own experimental findings, we analyze key aspects of the structure and functions of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM). We conclude that identification of NCAM mimetics opens up novel prospects for elucidation of the role of NCAM in neural differentiation and plasticity and, therefore, for practical development of new tools useful for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.
