Papilloma viruses (PV) have been known to cause benign and malignant tumors in animals for more than 100 years. It took over 20 years to win general acceptance for their causative role in anogenital carcinomas in humans in particular in cervial carcinoma. Extensive research has led to the development of a prophylactic vaccine which is now commercially available. It remains to be investigated if HPV-specific therapeutic vaccines can be developed. © 2007 Springer Medizin Verlag.
