Calcium and vitamin D supplementation ensures effectiveness of bisphosphonate therapy in osteoporosis

An adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is key to preventing and managing osteoporosis, although in most cases, oral bisphosphonates are required to achieve optimal results. Bisphosphonates improve bone mass and strength and consequently reduce the risk of fractures. However, maintenance of an adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is still needed to ensure that maximal benefits are achieved during bisphosphonate treatment. © 2007 Adis Data Information BV.
