Supervision can be understood as one method of fieldwork education and staff development that enables counselors to acquire new professional and personal insights through their own experiences. In this paper dimensions of learning activities of Walter and Marks as well as other psychological concepts of learning and development (Piaget, Kolb) as applied to the learning process in supervision are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the explanation of interdependence of personal and professional development in supervision and their integration into a so called "professional self" (Kessel and Haan). © 2003 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
