Activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key regulator of energy balance at both the cellular and wholebody levels. The activation of AMPK has a considerable potential in the therapy of a number of metabolic disorders as well as cancer. The achievements in the develop ment of smallmolecule activators of AMPK are reviewed. © 2015 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
